How State-to-State Car Shipping Works
The process typically begins with a transportation quote. Several factors can affect the cost, including the pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, transportation method, current carrier availability, fuel costs, and how flexible your pickup dates are.
Once you decide to move forward, your shipment is scheduled and a carrier is assigned based on the route and vehicle requirements.
Before pickup, you’ll receive the carrier and scheduling information needed to prepare for transportation.
Open vs. Enclosed Transport
Most vehicles are transported using open auto transport. These are the multi-vehicle carriers commonly seen on highways and are generally the most economical option.
Enclosed transport provides additional protection from weather and road debris. It can be a good choice for classic, exotic, collectible, or high-value vehicles.
The right option depends on your vehicle, budget, and the level of protection you prefer.
What Happens at Pickup?
When the driver arrives, the vehicle should be inspected before loading. Existing scratches, dents, or other visible damage should be documented on the Bill of Lading, and photos should be taken.
The vehicle is then loaded and secured to the carrier for transportation.
It’s important to understand that pickup and delivery times can sometimes change because of traffic, weather, mechanical issues, previous deliveries, and other conditions encountered on the road. For this reason, transportation schedules are generally provided as estimated windows rather than exact guarantees.
How Long Does State-to-State Shipping Take?
Transit time depends largely on distance and route.
A shipment between neighboring states may take only a few days, while a coast-to-coast shipment can take considerably longer. Pickup time is separate from transit time: before transportation begins, a carrier first needs to be available for your particular route.
Major metropolitan routes generally have more carrier traffic, while rural locations may require additional coordination.
Preparing Your Vehicle for Shipping
Before pickup, remove personal belongings and valuables, check that the vehicle is accessible to the driver, and make sure there is enough fuel for loading and unloading without filling the tank unnecessarily.
You should also photograph the vehicle from multiple angles shortly before pickup. These photos provide a useful record of its condition.
If the vehicle is inoperable, let your broker know before booking. Inoperable vehicles may require a carrier equipped with a winch or other loading equipment.
What Happens at Delivery?
At delivery, inspect the vehicle before signing the final Bill of Lading. Compare its condition with the pickup inspection and photographs.
If you notice any new damage, document it on the Bill of Lading before signing and take clear photographs.
For most shipments, however, delivery is simply the final step: the vehicle is unloaded, inspected, and handed back to you.
